A window shell is kinda like...a skin for your windows OS. You can download different shells. with no desktop, new desktop, no toolbars, new toolbars...etc.
The windows shell that your Windows comes with when you buy it is explorer.exe (Windows Explorer).
Its not permanent. Its like a dress. It looks pretty so you can keep wearing it. But you can take it off and swithc to what you used to have. You lose NOTHING! My favorite shell is geOshell. You can download geoshell from www.geoshell.com .
